What are liposomes?

Our high strength liposomal vitamin D3 and K2 liquid delivers superior absorption compared to standard vitamin D supplements. It uses nano-technology called "liposomes". 

Liposomes are tiny phospholipid bubbles that shield and protect these key vitamins against the harsh stomach acid of the digestive system to help ensure they get absorbed into the bloodstream. Liposomes are made from the same material as cell membranes so that the nutrients can be absorbed straight into cells. This overcomes the absorption issues that tablets and powders can face. 

The main challenge for typical forms of vitamins/supplements is that they must travel through the digestive system, reducing the amount of active ingredient that is ultimately available for uptake. Liposomal studies* show the absorption rate of liposomal supplements is significantly higher compared to normal supplements.

Unlike regular vitamin D drops, our high strength vitamin D3 and K2 liposomal liquid is gentle on the stomach. A liposomal delivery system also prevents stomach upset, which is common with normal tablets.

Vitamin D is commonly known as the “sunshine vitamin”. It is produced naturally by the body when exposed to the sunlight. This vitamin is indispensable for mental well-being.

Vitamin D deficiency primarily occurs due to the fact that the majority of our vitamin D comes from the sun. Relying solely on diet alone is not a viable source. To help address the problem, the UK Department of Health recommends everyone to consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement in winter - particularly those with limited sunlight exposure.

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), vitamin D plays a crucial role in supporting and promoting the normal function of the immune system and healthy inflammatory response. The normal absorption/utilisation of calcium and phosphorus. The normal blood calcium levels. The maintenance of normal bones. The maintenance of normal muscle function. The maintenance of normal teeth. It also has a role in the process of cell division and is needed for the normal growth and development of bone in children.

 

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the most important form for human health and is the recommended form to take as a supplement. Many vitamin D3 supplements are sourced from lanolin, which comes from sheep's wool (a non-vegan source). 

Traditionally, vitamin D sourced from plants has been the D2 form (ergocalciferol). This has a slightly different structure to vitamin D3, which makes it less beneficial for maintaining vitamin D levels in the body.* 

However, the vegan vitamin D3 included in our liposomal formula has been produced from a 100% plant source. This not only makes the supplements suitable for vegans but also cuts down the carbon being produced during the production process.

The vegan source of vitamin D3 comes from algae, with no animals involved in the process. It still produces the most body-ready form of vitamin D3, cholecalciferol, but it is also non-GMO (genetically modified), sustainably produced, and Kosher certified.

 

About the Ingredients

Vitamin K2 compound (medium chain triglycerides, Menaquinone-7)

Vitamin K2, although less widely known and present in fewer foods compared to vitamin K1, plays an essential role in various aspects of health, particularly cardiovascular health.
 
It is also beneficial to anyone who wants to take care of their bone health and circulatory health, as it helps to maintain bone strength and density while protecting blood vessels from hardening. It does this via the activation of 'K-dependent' proteins osteocalcin (OC) and matrix Gla-protein (MGP). MGP transports calcium away from where it can cause harmful hardening of soft tissue (i.e. calcification) towards the bones, where it contributes to their strength and structure (see further below).
 
Vitamin K2 is not easily obtainable from foods typically found in the Western diet, accounting for only around 10% of its composition. It is typically found in animal-based foods, like beef liver and cheese, while K1 is found in plant foods. Vitamin K2 can, therefore, be challenging to access through food sources. For instance, to obtain just 75mcg per day, a person would need to consume 7kg of beef, 8.5 litres of milk or 14 eggs. This is why supplementation is often sought after, especially by vegans.
 
According to the EFSA, vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting and to the maintenance of healthy bones. However, the importance of vitamin K in this formula has more to do with how it interacts with and supports vitamin D3.

Calcium levels 

When there is a substantial rise in the consumption of vitamin D, it may result in a rapid increase in calcium levels within the body. To prevent undesired deposits in places such as arteries or soft tissue, vitamin K aids in the absorption of this calcium and directs it to appropriate areas like bones and muscles. Failure to do so could lead to severe health complications, especially related to cardiovascular and bone health.
 
In order for vitamin D3 to be effectively absorbed and yield optimal results, it requires fat. By combining D3 and K2 with liposomes, which, as mentioned above, are lipid-based structures, the absorption of D3 can be enhanced. This combination ensures that D3 levels are increased more efficiently, offering a favourable approach to improving vitamin D3 status in the body.

Menaquinone-7 (MK-7) 

Vitamin K2, also known as menaquinone, is one of three types of vitamin K. The other two types are vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and K3 (menadione). Vitamin K2 is both a tissue and bacteria derived from vitamin K1 in both cases. It is commonly found in animal products, and fermented foods or can be synthesized artificially.

 

Bioavailability 

Vitamin K2 tends to have a higher bioavailability compared to vitamin K1. Notably, vitamin K2 exerts a prolonged presence in the body, allowing it to reach various tissues and effectively activate proteins involved in keeping calcium regulation. Moreover, vitamin K2 is classified as 'lipid soluble,' facilitating optimal absorption in the presence of dietary fats, as observed in our vegan formula.
 
Vitamin K2-MK7, specifically used in this liposomal formula, is widely recognized as the most efficient and effective form of vitamin K2. A recent study* indicated that among all the K2 vitamins, vitamin K2-MK7 is the version with the highest bioavailability. It is easily absorbed and stays active for an extended period.
